How to Automatically Close All Tabs When Exiting Chrome Browser

Chrome does not offer a built-in feature to automatically close all open tabs upon exit, but you can achieve similar functionality by using extensions or adjusting browser settings. Below are the methods to implement this.

How to Automatically Close All Tabs When Exiting Chrome Browser

1. Using Extensions

"Close All Tabs" Extension

You can use an extension from the Chrome Web Store to easily close all open tabs when you exit the browser.

  • Install the extension: Search for "Close All Tabs" or "Session Buddy" in the Chrome Web Store and install the extension.
  • Tab closing settings: With this extension, you can configure the browser to close all tabs before exiting easily.

2. Adjusting Chrome Settings

Open New Tab at Browser Start

While there isn't a direct option in Chrome to automatically close tabs upon exit, you can configure Chrome to always start with a new tab, preventing the restoration of previously opened tabs.

  • Access Chrome Settings: Click the three-dot menu in the top right corner of Chrome and select Settings.
  • Change Startup Settings: Navigate to the On Startup section in the left menu of the settings page.
  • Select 'Open the New Tab page': Choose the 'Open the New Tab page' option.

By enabling this setting, Chrome will always start with a new tab and won’t restore previously opened tabs.

3. Using Keyboard Shortcuts

One of the quickest and easiest ways to close all tabs is by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + W on Windows or Command + Shift + W on Mac. This shortcut will instantly close all open tabs and return you to the browser’s homepage.

4. Automatically Delete Cookies and Site Data on Exit

In addition to closing tabs, you can configure Chrome to automatically delete cookies and site data when exiting, ensuring that no session information is retained.

  • Access Settings: Go to Chrome Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies and other site data.
  • Enable 'Clear cookies and site data when you close all windows': Activate this option to automatically clear cookies and site data upon exit.

This ensures that any session data is erased when you close the browser, giving you a fresh start the next time you open it.
